Postpartum Rest and Recovery: My Recipe

Postpartum, the time after birth, is a period of change and integration where rest and recovery are necessary. As a midwife, I work with birthing families to help plan for this period during prenatal care. I also do many postpartum visits with every client, some visits at homes, some at my office, visits at the hospital when needed. Mother and baby are the obvious focus of ...

Evidence Based Care is a Three Legged Stool

Evidence based care (aka evidence based practice) is a phrase that gets tossed around a lot. Just Midwifery

Recently, someone asked on Facebook if I did “just midwifery or also OB-GYN?” At first I was taken aback: putting the word ‘just’ in front of anything sounds belittling. But I quickly got over myself and realized that she was simply asking a question. What a great question! Do I do just midwifery? Maybe… In NY state, Licensed Midwives provide full scope health care for women. ...

Black Maternal Health Week 2018

On Tuesday, I took part in a press conference at the NYS Assembly highlighting Black Maternal Health Week, maternal mortality, a racial disparity in health outcomes. Spending time in the Capital with cameras and reporters and legislators puts me way out of my comfort zone but I put on my best face (and some lipstick) and did my part. Here is the statement I give and ...

Coconut Rich Cake

These days so many things are free-gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar-free... Well, not this cake. It is rich! Rich with sugar, gluten, and most importantly, coconut! I made it dairy-free but it would be easy to substitute butter for coconut oil and 'regular' sweetened condensed milk for the coconut one that I use. This cake is really good. I mean, it is really, really good. Moist, flavorful, delicate ...

2017 by the Numbers

2017 Numbers A new year is here, 2018. Like many of you, I find myself simultaneously looking forward and looking back. What did I do last year? What should I have done? What should I have left undone? What will I do this year? What should I do? What should I leave undone? As one year ends and another begins, I look over my ...
